How To Clean Crizal Prevencia Lenses

    Crizal--What can't I use on it?

So far I haven't found any published information that says what is okay to use as a cleaner on Crizal and what isn't.

Can anyone refer me to specific published information on the web or get me printed copies? (Comments are fine but I'd like to have published information perferably from Essilor).

    Doc,

we've had no problems with any of the a/r fluids on the market. Usage of the cleaners with a microfiber cloth or soft , low lint cotton towel does a wonderful job. Also, a mild soap, such as "dishwashing dawn" does a great job in removing oil deposits from the lenses.

    Doc,

are you looking for a publication that informs you as a ECP or are you looking for something to inform the patient. If the latter, most labs send out the customer information card with each job for that purpose.

I'm looking for published scientific information. I have not found any yet--even on the crizalpro.com website.

doc, we use rubbing alcohol, works great, won't hurt the lens or czl.

    Big Smile AR Published information

    Good morning Dr. Watson,

I have found a web site that will help you in your quest.

This is for the eye-care professionals interested in learning more about AR council educational materials.

You may contact the AR council at www.arcouncil.org
    or arcouncil@aol.com

    I hope this helps you.

    Robert Wagner

    ;)

Here's the back of a "Certificate of Authenticity" card that essilor encloses with AR coated lenses.

File is a zipped word 6 doc. Sorry about the resolution.

Essilor recommends using the provided cleaning cloth to clean Crizal lenses. Warm water and a small amount of soap can also be used (although soaps with degreasers should be avoided). Liquid Ivory soap works just fine.

Alcohol also works well to clean Crizal lenses- however, depending upon the substrate to which Crizal has been applied, you may wish to avoid getting alcohol on the lens edge or in any holes which may have been drilled into the lens.

Crizal is also impervious to acetone, but using acetone for routine cleaning is not recommended due to possible negative interactions with the lens and/or frame material.

Thanks everyone for your help--especially to Pete Hanlin, the Essilor man.

A few more questions: What will alcohol do to the frame? I know alcohol is pretty strong stuff and can damage a lot of things. What is it that's bad about getting it into holes? Will it do anything to a metal frame?

I understand what acetone does to certain plastics--not good.

What is the deal about Windex? People keep telling me that it's bad. Is ammonia damaging to Crizal? It seems that if Crizal is impervious to alcohol and acetone why would it be damaged by ammonia?

I would also like to add on to the docs's last post. What is the difference between regular IPA and denatured IPA?

Alcohol tends to dry out certain materials. I am told that denatured alcohol does not do this and is much better than Isopropyl alcohol for use in ophthalmic applications.

There is also a certain drill mount frame currently being produced with bushings that will dissolve in isopropyl alcohol. Without naming the company, the frame has a drilled hole and a notch- with a rather large bushing in the hole. If you are dispensing frames that use this type of mounting, check with your frame rep for info on compatibility with alcohol.

I failed to mention this in my last post, but cleaners containing silicone should be avoided when cleaning multi-layered AR stacks (like Crizal). While the silicone will not damage the actual AR coating, it will compromise the performance of the hydrophobic coating. As a result, the lenses will become harder to clean over time (and, if you happen to have the AirMark logo on your lenses, you may eradicate the mark over time).

Concerning Windex, I have always heard that the ammonia contained in this solution will damage AR coated lenses. That said, I don't see anything in our R&D literature that indicates ammonia would damage Crizal- still, better safe than sorry.
